Our sump pump will run fine for a few minutes then you can hear it running but no water is moving. Shortly after that the alarm comes on and the backup pump engages. If I unplug the pump and plug it back in then it engages again and pumps water fine for a few minutes.

From my limited research it seems like an air lock. There is a vent hole already drilled in the discharge pipe and it is not clogged. What else could be causing my issue.

Could have something stuck in the pump or could just be a bad pump.

Problem is check valve failure. part of the flapper had come loose inside and would sometimes clog the mechanism.

I agree sounds like a check valve issue. I assume your backup pump and main pump are running 2 different discharge PVC pipes and then combine into one? If water is still being moved by one of the pumps no problem, then you shouldn't need to worry about anything as all signs point back to the check valve on the main pump.
