strange smell

Hi all, I've had this strange sewer-like smell coming from the bathroom. Replaced the wax ring and still getting it. I've noticed in the back of the toilet there's gas bubbling up out of the top of the toilet fill valve. I have a gas detector and it went off next to it like crazy. Could this be where the smell is coming from? What's going on here?

Do you live near an area where fracking is being done?
Sometimes gas can get into the ground water.
But natural gas does not have a strong smell.
Are you on well water?
