I have a shower that was never finished and the pipe for the shower head is metal and larger than the copper pipe I am used to. Any ideas or options would be greatly appreciated. I would estimate the pipe to be 3/4”

You might want to tap on it gently, a few times.
To try to break the bond with the grout that is packed around it.
Before unscrewing it.
But the escutcheon for the new shower arm will probably cover all that anyway.

Good luck screwing in a shower arm. That ceiling looks awful low.

Looks like plenty of room for rotating in a normal shower arm.
Area above the wall tile looks unfinished and yucky.
Dirty drywall, maybe no caulk, is that mold, no tile on ceiling?

Also, if you have a valve already in the wall, make sure it is turned off before you take that nipple off.
I agree, remove cap first so residual water comes out in shower and not in the wall.

And put a drop cloth down. That's a black steel fitting. It may have rusty water in it and it will stain the floor.
