Shower handle came off and it does't use an allen screw

Hello,
My shower handle fell off. I can't get it back on. It has a screw on the inside. As far as I can tell, the metal piece that houses the screw is seized so I can't remove it... I tried vice grips and other types of tools to try to remove it, it's stuck
My options are to either buy a whole new set of the same configuration, or possibly drill a hole in the center top so I can access the screw and put a plastic plug... thoughts?

It's a Premier brand.
