Righty-tighty on both ends. Is there a trick to it?

Hello everyone,

I am not sure if I should post in the Forum, but my question is "general" so I'll try here first.

I had to replace some rusted out parts on my well, and now that I am putting the parts on, I am having problems figuring out how to do it.

From my well, there is the off/on valve, then the filter, then out to my house. I had to replace the nipple from the filter to the well, and now when I screw in the filter to the valve, I cannot figure out how to get the other end (the out end) to attach to my other pipes.

I have tried tightening the "in" end as tight as possible, then loosening to tighten the "out" end, so the filter is attached about halfway on the threads on each side.

Is this how I do it, or is there some plumbers trick for doing this?

I'm sorry if my explanation wasn't understandable, but I am not handy at all!

Thank you very much for any help/tips!

It sounds as if you need a reverse thread union. Many big box hardware stores carry them in stock, or one may have to be custom made to fit your needs.
