I have a feeling the answer is no... but are there any alternative materials you can use when replacing a steel steam pipe for residential steam heat?

No!
Look up the temperature limits of this plastic pipe and I believe you'll have your answer.
 
I've seen copper steam lines in residential houses but plastic pipe would never be allowed
