Reconnect a lift rod to plug (Kohler 21454 part)

Can anyone help with as to how to reconnect bath tub lift rod to plug on bathtub? Thank you. Entire plug piece comes out as does lift rod after removal of plate. Please advise. Thanks. Kohler Lift rod

I’ve made a lot of money reinstalling those for people.

The maid will remove the bottom part and they can’t get it back together.
