push down drain problem..will click to close but will not click open?

I have installed a push down bathroom sink drain but although it clicks closed when pushed down, I can not get it to click up when I want the drain to open. The drain click mechanism works well to open and close prior to the installation after the install on the basin will not click open. Any suggestion as to what me causing this frustrating problem?

Twist it a half turn counter clockwise. You should be able to find the sweet spot where it opens and closes just right.
