That's a pressure regulating valve, and that's a spring loaded check valve,you are gonna need a couple of unions on each side of thepvc

Could you elaborate? I've attached a new photo from further back so you can see there's no pvc attached...just copper pipe on each side.

The PVC in the picture is from the furnace

Backflow preventers are only used when the local jurisdiction requires them. Infrequent in my experience.
We only use double union PRV devices..1679279899300.jpeg
