I have a vintage American standard sink and I am trying to replace a leaking metal p-trap. I was able to disconnect the pipe to the sink, but I can’t remove the piece in the back...(see yellow arrows). Any help is greatly appreciated.

Agreed.
It looks like the thin tubular tailpiece from the sink drain is rusted out.

The trap is heavier gauge and looks good in your pic.

You are correct the leak is coming from above, but I can’t get the broken piece off. Do I need to remove the sink?

You not only have to remove the sink, you will undoubtably have to cut the pop-up drain assembly off with a Sawzall. Replace with a Chrome plated one of decent quality. Price Pfister at least. That P trap is worth saving. What vintage is it? Look for date stamp on the sink.

Post a wider picture of the whole drain including right under the sink.

Does the current drain have a pop up linkage, or is there just a rubber stopper to fill the basin with water?

Is there an overflow hole in the upper rim of the basin?

Hi Jeff, yes there is an overflow hole. I got the best pictures I could as the sink is still attached to the wall.

Every picture is waaay too close to the subject, please move back or shoot wider.

Some ofthe pics you are posting make no sense, looks as though you cropped them or zoomed in on some random area.

I don’t understand what is going on here, these pics are showing two different drains, one with a pop up, one without.

Crouch a little lower, move back more, and take a pic that shows the underside of the sink and the whole trap, all in one pic.

So we can figure out how to get from A to B.

Hope these are better
