Working on an existing pump system that consists of a multi stage, turbin style, 55 hp pump feeding a 12” line, that is about 1me long and operates (2) zimmatic pivots. It is a manual system that operates on an on/off switch.
The owner wants to use the 12” line to fill some stock tanks out toward its End point. A 1hp, 4” submersible pump was installed in a 4” steel casing 5’ long in a 5’-6” wet well. The bottom of pump motor is 8” above the bottom of the casing. The submersible is operated manually with on/off button. The pump is a Franklin 240 volt , single phase, 3 wire pump, 3 wire with Franklin control box.
There was 12” check valve installed on the 12” line to prevent drain back when pump is off. The submersible’s purpose is as a jockey pump on the 12” line to provide 20 Gpm at the stock tank.
Currently the 12” line is empty. It was drained for some maintenance work. The 1hp pump was tested after install to see if it was operational. There is a 2” drain valve close to the wet well and pumps, that was left open to observe if the submersible was moving water.
The pump runs for about 1-1/2 minutes and shut itself off. It is moving water into the empty 12” line and out through 2” drain. All electrical was checked and is appears to be correct. What could be causing this issue? Could it have anything to do with overrun of the pump, caused by trying to fill the 12” line pulling too many amps? Would it make a difference if 12” line was full, causing some back pressure, which would be the normal operating condition?
Please let me know any suggestions that you may have. Thanks for your time.
