Before I call a plumber, because I won't try a DIY project on something so important, I want to be a litte more educated befere I call someone in.

I have a Well-X-Trol Pressure Pump Tank - 20 gal. We also have additional sand filters on the line and have changed them.

It sounds as if we've had air in the lines for about 10 days and we've had increasingly low water pressure.

There is an external pressure gauge near the pump and it reads about 25 PSI but does go up to 40 now and then.

How do I tell if its the pump or the well?

Before you call anyone, find out who you need. A Plumber is not always the one that works on your well or pump/tank. A well man is not the guy to call when you water heater stops working etc.

Since you didn't tell me anything about you pump, I'm only winging it here.

A submersible pump that gives you air means something is usually wrong down the well. A jet pump that gives you air, could be getting it from anywhere between the pump and the bottom of the well.

With more info about you system, I can be more useful.
