Turn off pilot gas for 5 minutes. Take off sheet metal cover, exposing the burner.. Then, place dial to pilot. Push down on the red button, keeping it held down, while using a fireplace (long) lighter into the center of the burner, until it ignites. Keep button held down for 30-60 seconds, slowly lifting on the button to make sure it remains lit. Once your gas stays lit, then rotate handle to on.

P.S. the instructions are printed right above the dial.

So I did that but when the red buttons down, I don’t hear anything or smell anything either, and nothing lights up when I put the fire close to the burner.

Put the fire at the end of the copper wire that leads into the burner compartment. This is where the pilot lights.....
