Hey Everyone,

I’m trying to replace my kitchen sink p-trap but have run in to trouble removing the old one. In the picture, you’ll see the part that goes to the wall is corroded and crumbling. It is stuck in a 3” nipple (cast iron I think), which connects to a cast iron elbow fitting and then more cast iron pipe into the wall.

Should I try to break up the p-trap and remove the pieces? Or should I replace the 3” nipple?

Thanks for any advice.

Update: after working a small screwdriver in there I was able to get the old p-trap out.

Nice work. Yeah, in those situations, it's usually just a matter of bending the thing enough to get the pressure off the pipe walls, and pry it out. They're never fun.

Next time, try heating the nipple up with a hair dryer or heat gun.

It softens up the grease and old crud that is holding the trap from pulling out more easily.
