My house is 67 years old. I just cut out the last portion of the original drain piping. I believe this is old cast iron pipe (see pictures). So I purchased one of the Fernco Proflex couplings to connect the new PVC pipe that goes up and ties to the old cast iron pipe right below a toilet. The other end of that run of cast iron pipe runs down and out of the house through the foundation. The couplings fit perfectly over the new PVC pipe. But they are fairly loose around the old cast iron pipe. The PVC measures right at 4-1/2 inches from each side of the outside of the pipe. The case iron is right at 4 inches from each side of the outside of the pipe. So on the PVC the coupling tightens down firm as it should. But on the cast iron pipe I had to really crank down on it to seal the coupling around the cast iron.

Is there a better coupling to use for this? Just curious because the cast iron pipe is about 1/2 inch different in size from the new PVC pipe.

Are you using the correct band?
You should be using the 3000- series

3'' cast to 3'' plastic
3000-33

4'' cast to 4'' plastic

3000-44

..........................
sch 40 pvc pipe is a larger OD than cast iron
the larger diameter band fits the pvc
the smaller diameter fits the cast
2'' cast od - 2.30........2'' pvc od 2.375
3'' cast od- 3.30.........3'' pvc od 3.50
4'' cast od- 4.30........4'' pvc od 4.30

No hubs. Per code that's what you use inside. And technically that's inside. At least that's code in my town, don't know if it's an IPC thing. They fit a bit more snug around the pipe pending it's not over the bumpy letters on the cast iron.

Thanks. I did infact have the wrong band. The only 4" band they had was the 3005-44 (for plastic to plastic). I found the 3000-44 last night with one side fit for the plastic and the other side thicker for the cast. Thanks for the help!
