Do I really need a check valve?

I know the way it was originally installed is not the best (90 degrees angles) but I'm not sure how it can be fixed. The previous owner said they never needed a check valve... I'm looking to replace my primary sump pump and possibly to redo the whole system...

Yes there should be a check valve other wise when the pump stops any water in that pipe will drain back into the pit
There is a combination ball valve Union, check valve that you can buy
There is also a quiet check valve you can buy
There is normally a second hole for a tank vent
When you do test the system if the piping vibrates you will need to secure it

Not having a check valve will cause a pump to fail.
