I think the O.D of tubular is the actual size in inches as named, but the wall thickness or gauge will determine the I.D. of it.

So the copper O.D. is 1/8 inch fatter than I thought.

Still must be a fitting to make this work.

Or, as Diehard said, the copper stub or nipple might be threaded.
Because if the trap has been soldered on, wouldn’t that have discolored the chrome finish?

So if the trap can be unscrewed, you can screw on a trap adapter.
The slot you cut in the copper might be sealed up when you screw on a brass or copper fitting over it, with plenty of teflon tape.

You might have to cut apart the trap, so you can spin it off the copper threads.
Don’t cut into the tailpiece!

I think he needs to let the pro come in and do it right for him. If he is having trouble trying to understand what Jeff
is talking about then maybe he should stop here. If he messes up that fitting in the wall then he will have big troubles.
Just my opinion.
