I am in the middle of a remodel from tub to walk in shower. I disconnected the drain but it broke when I removed the tub.

Please see pics below.... how do I fix this?
Thanks in advance.

Is that a question or a statement?
Well I posted the message before it was complete. See my reply to my own message. Or not if you want to be an ass.

You need to remove the broken piece of pipe from the fitting in the ground. They make bits that ream it out of the fitting. You can also cut notches into the pipe being careful not to cut through the fitting and chip it out with a screwdriver.

I would recommend doing what CT18 proposes. You can just take the broken piece and replace it with a new one that'll fit for the new drain you'll be installing for your shower. Just be carefull not to damage the unbroken pipe connected to the broken one! If you find a way to heat the PVC it'll make the job easier.

Here is a helpful company I know has plumbing replacement parts for good prices: Search Results
