Brother in law just had a major plumbing issue with his sump pump discharge . Seems that the line from his basement sump pump was plugged solid out in the yard which resulted in a replacement of said pipe. I saw a cross section of the pipe, it looked like sediment build up but was described as hard as cement. House is 30 years old. Is there a way to prevent this type of build up in my sump pump system ? Is it calcium / magnesium that accumulates over time ? The water hardness in the city water is 4.5 to 5 grains .

I wonder if the pipe line remains full when not being pumped, rather than drain out if sloped in the direction of its discharge. And whether that would contribute to the buildup rather than when the pipe remains empty when not being pumped.
So I researched it and couldn't find any info along those lines.
I know this is of no help other than maybe others may have some info on that theory also.
