hi all, have just installed a new septic tank system, (single 1000 gall. tank for all waste) and has been running happily for family of 3 for one month now :)
To ensure long trouble free service what should I do often/occasionally?
Have noticed a robust odour (seriously cheesy - like cheese cheese) from the breather pipe - normal? Have heard happy tanks don't smell...is this true?
Commercial additives/yogurt/bicarb any use?
Measuring and adjusting pH at exit, sounds reasonable, like for a pool only for bacteria:)

Any advice much appreciated

My advice would be to let it be. A good level of bacteria will grow on it's own without additives. The smell should start the balance out, although will not go away.

Paul - thanks for your help, tend to agree.
Have been trying to find some authoritative info on the workings of a septic tank but so far found nothing
