I had my old alcove shower tore out and am currently having a new shower pan custom built/installed. When we tore out the old shower the drain was just a 4 inch brass drain that threaded right into the concrete floor. The drain opening is 4 inches wide and 1 inch deep and then it veers off to almost a 90 degree angle.. so the new contractor is stating it will be safe to just drill the new drain right onto the plywood subfloor and everything will drain properly.. so my question is it ok for the shower drain to not actually connect with the drain pipe under the subfloor? The white paper towel in the picture is where actual drain is, with no actual pvc exposed

If that shower drain ever backs up do to a clog you will have all that water under your new shower base. It should be hooked up solid
to be correct.
