For about a month, whenever we use the hot water side on the upstairs kitchen and half bath, when we turn the water off abruptly, the water pipes bang real loud. I have tried shutting off the hot water supply and draining the water from the lines, then turning it back on and letting the lines fill up again. That did not relieve the banging. But it only happens with those two appliances. the tiolets upstairs and bathtub do not cause the pipes to bang. neither do the appliance in the full bath downstairs or the washing machine. Any ideas on what could be causing this? And a easy way to fix it, if possible?

Classic case of water hammer.

You need to install water hammer arrestors on the pipes. As close to the fixture as possible. This may require the help of a professional.

Since it only occurs with those two fixtures, I have to think that perhaps the pipes are loose from the studs. You may need to install some pipe clamps.
