I broke the tank to my toilet and am wondering if I need to replace the entire toilet or if I will be able to find a tank that will fit.
The toilet is a Sears Roebuck & Co from 1971.

I wonder how well it will work.
1.6 gallons. vs maybe 5 gallons

WHY?

the bowl construction never changed
it is the tank that were made smaller

Not exactly. Bowls were certainly re-engineered to work with less of a water flow. You cannot flush the toilet from 1955 with .9 gallons of water.

You can get a very fine toilet for less than $200 so this is a no brainer and trying to fix something from 1971 is a ridiculous waste of time.

We replace tanks all the time

LOl..Really..It is no big deal

BOWLS are the same. it is a 3'' p trap. the size and configuration of the trap has not changed
There HAVE been improvements in the swirl pattern of the bowl over the years.
but not the bowl itself. The changes were made to the tanks

You have 2 types of [residential] bowls, a 3 hole and a 2 hole
these are not interchangeable but any 2 hole tank will fit any 2 hole bowl.
and any 3 hole will ......ALSO

What I've read about newer toilets is best ones changed how fast water from tank can get to bowl. Using speed instead of quantity to get waste out of the bowl.
