    Tricks of the trade

Hey fellow plumbers. I wanted to take a moment to say thanks! There are some very knowlegeable people on this site and I've already learned some and am always ready for more. I thought it would be fun to share some battle stories to help us all gain a little more insight. We all have had some...

    Pipes and holes in basement

If there is a basement, I doubt they would have burried an oil tank. I hear two half inch lines and a 2 inch hole I'm thinking old sink lines. the other set with 3 holes could be an old sink, maybe with washer drain and floor drain possibly. or two sinks and a washer..haha. Older homes often...

About Plumbing: I'm thinking of becoming a plumber. Can I get some advice please?

Where I live in PA, journeyman and master plumbing tests are open book. You have to be famiiar with the book and where to look for certain things or youll never be able to answer all the questions in time. I think that is fair because any master plumber should be able to look in the book for...

    Shower Valve Seal Plate Help

Tile guys are not at fault if the diverter is to deep in the wall. Tile requires a layer of cement board and they are not able to adjust how the far the tile sticks out. The best remedy is a whole in the wall and an adjustment to the diverter depth. maybe from the front you can unsrew your...

    Shower Drain Help

There is no kit to use this floor drain and adapt to a shower drain properly. Its possible not proper but theoretically you could find as piece of pipe that fits inside the smaller portion of the existing drain and as wrong as it is silicone it down in, use bushings on the new shower drain to...

    Faucet stopped working

Main water line should come through basement wall or if its on a slab somewhere up through the floor in a closet. Check the aerator too...it could be plugged from broken down rubber from valves. angle valve handles spinning round and round is not a good sign....good luck.

    Wye vs Sweep?

The only time I use a tee is on stack vents, using a y on a stack breaks the vent. long turn 90's or wye 45 combo on vertical to horizontal, regular 90 from horizontal to vertical.

    Moving an expansion tank question

Moving your tank 20 or more feet is not an issue, you'll have to move wiring for pump switch too, im sure you knew that. The tank connected to the old well should remain because the pressure switch would have your pump turning on and off really fast without it. Basically, when the pressure drops...

    whole house is backed up...

I've opened so many sewers and the best thing you can do in the meantime is use single ply paper, no feminine products or condoms....and most of all no wipes!

    Old Tub Shower Faucet

Many replacement spouts are designed to slide onto the OD of copper pipe sealed with a built in rubber o-ring with a set screw which is probably the easiest option if you have the ability to solder....all you need is a 1/2" copper male adapter and piece of copper pipe. a little tape and dope on...

How Do I Fix This Shower Faucet

If there are any closed fixtures above this shower that are closed, its going to take forever for it to stop dripping since there are pipes filled with water above. Many times old valves will shut down the water almost completely but dont create 100% seal. Try turning a little harder in the off...

    Shower Drain Help

Sounds like your trying to use an existing floor drain in your basement. If so the drain is huge, cast Iron, and it needs to go. Make sure it takes water well before you put it into use. Break up the concrete around the drain dig down till you find the pipe below the drain, if I'm guessing...

    Please Help!

A new diverter and trim kit would be ideal. The huge whole in the shower wall is oddly shaped and oversized and any trim kit may not cover it well. If your trying to be cheap, take some pliers and confirm that the valve works without the handle, if it does, buy an American Standard single handle...

How do I stop this kind of faucet from dripping?

That faucet is shot! The washer used to be held on by that corroded flat head screw that will never come out, new faucets are cheap and I'm guessing someone got their moneys worth out of that old one.

    aerator for tub spout

Before installing an expensive water system, I would try chlorinating the well. Open the well casing and dump a whole bottle of bleach down into your well. That will definatly kill the algea, but it may not be a permanant fix. dont drink the water, the bleach will dissapate in 3-5 days and...

    Toilet Leak?

The toilet should not leak from the wax ring unless it has been flushed or there is a sewer backup. Any water leak at all on a toilet will end up around the base of the bowl, I would check supply valve, water supply line, tank to bowl bolts. Could definatly be a leaking pipe, try to determine if...

Basement radiators cold, suspect air lock

Hey there buddy! Heres a bit of advice all the way from Lehighton, Pa. I'm assuming that you have a Hydronic heating system with separate heat loops since you have heat in some areas and none in others. First I must warn that almost all of these heating systems should never be operated higher...
