    Securing shower supply line?

Firstly, please explain where on this planet anyone uses pex for a shower arm. Secondly, please explain how using pex for the "shower riser" which terminates at the drop el 90 would restrict flow. The id is the same whether it's a copper or pex riser! That said, I would personally always use...

    30 x 60 deep 2 apron tub?

I'm confused by your question. If you have an existing tub with skirt visible on 2 sides, why can't you build a knee-wall under the return skirt to support a single apron tub? There must be some clearance, otherwise a return skirt would not have been installed. However, if you are remodeling...

moen shower valve won't shut off

On Positemp cartridges there is a notch on 1 side of the stem which you thread the handle onto. That notch should be in the bottom ( 6 o'clock ) position when you put the handle on. If the notch is in the 12 o'clock position it's been my experience that the faucet will not shut off correctly.

My first soldering job - will it leak?

Spoken like a true homeowner! You, as the home buyer/owner only deal with the finished product. We, as tradesmen, have to compete against each other when bidding the jobs that ultimately create your home. Homes are plumber per code, and material costs add up over the course of many homes...

Adding a sink to basement that is not stubbed for plumbing

I am located in New Jersey. That said, I have run the drain for a sink to the vent off of the ejector crock. this assumes that the drain run is within allowable distance to a vented line.

Changing a copper connecter to a cast iron stack

If you want to unthread the brass/copper adaptor which is threaded into the cast iron I would suggest heating up the cast iron female threads. Metal expands when it is heated, therefore heating the copper/brass adaptor will only make it tougher to unthread. Heat the female threads & be amazed...

    Replacing old Leaded Drum Trap?

First off I would guess that any prior leak was coming from a compression nut joint as opposed to the actual drum trap, although threads from tailpieces into the trap can fail & leak. Anyhow, drum traps are illegal per the code of the state I work in ( New Jersey ). To replace the...

Should I change aging but working shower valve?

I guess it depends on whether you want to update the trim for your fixture either now or in the future. i'm assuming, since your valve is 40 yrs old it has 2 screws which hold the finished plate onto the valve and both of these screws are located at the bottom of the finished plate. All newer...

    Toilet PVC pipe help needed

Let me try to explain it this way: The fitting into which the broken pipe from your toilet goes is called a sanitary T. Think of that 3" drain in the floor as a highway and the T is the on-ramp. If you were trying to get onto that highway going the right direction you'd have a 50/50 chance of...

    Fitting for change in direction

Why are you comparing apples to oranges? If you want an answer to any changes in a particular code from one issue to the next then do yourself a favor and use the same code for comparison purposes. Since you had access to the '06 IPC I'm guessing you have access to the '09 IPC. If not google...

    Lead joints

If you are really a plumbing apprentice then you should be watching everything your journeyman or master is teaching you. You should also address these regional code questions to them. They have put in their time learning the trade & it shows you are thinking about the trade ( although a...

    Basement Bathroom Problem

Firstly, is the water fine at the toilet and or sink in the same bathroom? If so then you may have a clogged cartridge from when ya turned the water on to the bathroom. Another possibility is if the shower valve has integral stops they may not be open. Just my .02. Best of luck with your...

Unusual project. How strong are sweated copper joints?

As copper is a soft metal, in addition to being on the expensive side, I would not recommend it for any racking/shelving system. If, for some reason, you want to use copper because ya have a bunch of it laying around, I would suggest scrapping the copper & using the proceeds to buy either 3/8...

Gluing the last piece of ABS

    1) You shouldn't be putting the 1' length of pipe out of the return 90 on yer trap into a 90. Either use a long sweep 90 or fabricate a long radius 90 by gluing a 45 & service 45 together. Reason is, 90's should not be used in horizontal drainage, it restricts flow. 2) Do you have access to...

    Replacing main supply line

    1) I the meter at the street in a meter pit? If so there should be a shutoff on the meter horn. That said why would you put a shutoff outside your house? Shutoffs get put inside the house & are accessible in the event you need to get the water off quickly. 2) You should stick with running...

"Flush Up" pump systems for basement bathrooms

I have installed the Sano-Flo system, another above-the-floor system I know as a Quick-John system and the in-ground crock system. All 3 have good points to them. The first question I would ask is what are you looking to put in the basement, a powder room (toilet & sink) or a full bath...
