to drain or not to drain?

I always have an air compressor connected to the system when I drain ours, because I am winterizing the house to leave for 5 months. I think this helps as the air pressure going down the dip tube agitates the silt in the bottom, and it cleans it better. I leave everything empty with a little...

    WH question

We leave our water heater in Arizona full and shut off for 7 months over summer, it doesn't have a drain, and it's more apt to rust with air in it that water. The water in our part of AZ is bad, I'm surprised the heater has lasted 12 years, I check it for leaks twice a week when were there, it...

Best solutions to prevent frozen pipes

OK, I understand, if you use it that often you need to leave the lines full and heat it. And if you want to leave a faucet drip you can't shut off the water. It sounds like you have made the heating system more reliable. Good luck!

Does Water Softener and Gas Water Heater Need to be Off when water to the house is off?

We always turn off the power to the softener too, otherwise it may try to regenerate, and not have enough water to do it. But then you have to reset the timer when you re-start it.

Best solutions to prevent frozen pipes

We have 2 seasonal residences in N MN, even though we heat them somewhat over winter I blow out all the water lines, pretty easy to do.

    Campbell pressure gauge accuracy?

It's really hard to find gages that are very accurate unless you spend a lot of money, and it doesn't matter anyhow, what I do to confirm that the pressure tank preload is set correct is: Turn off the power to the pump, and then slowly bleed off the pressure in the system, watching the gauge...

    Rusted out Ball Valve Handle

You could just use an open ended adjustable (Crecent) wrench to turn it on or off, using the flats on the stem, because I'm not sure where you could buy a new handle, I have never needed one. Maybe Grainger? The nuts are usually fine threads, but it could be metric.

    Rusted out Ball Valve Handle

I think you're correct, the nut is probably gone, I can see one thread on the stem. The next piece next to the body of the valve is probably the packing gland.

    Rusted out Ball Valve Handle

The round end with 2 flat spots is the stem, or bolt, it has threads on it. The first black lump is the nut that holds the handle on, take a channel lock plier and screw that off, you may need to hold the remains of the handle to prevent the stem from turning. Google standard ball valve and...

    Pump output adapter fails

I think you mean a barbed hose adapter, correct? If so, metal ones are available, might solve the problem. If you're connecting ridged pvc directly to a pump you probably need to have a piece of rubber hose in between to isolate the vibration.

Asking for recommendation for a whole house single cartridge filtration system

I don't remember exactly how I fixed it, but when it wouldn't stop leaking, I took it apart and fixed it. But that's what I have done for 55 years!

Asking for recommendation for a whole house single cartridge filtration system

I have installed and used omni filters for over 40 years, with very few problems, but the ones I use look a little smaller than the one in your photo but uses the same size filter element. It's important to clean the threads thoroughly on the canister and replace the O-ring when necessary. I...

Defective pressure gauge on water pressure regulator

It seems many coutries that use the metric system use BSP pipe threads, which are similar diameter to NPT, but a diferent pitch. My metric tap and die set contains some BSP taps and dies.

    Frozen Pipe issues

If you have any water moving it should thaw out, but I suspect there is something else wrong. If you do determine that the line to the well is frozen, it can be thawed out by running a small line inside it with hot water. if it's a 1-inch line like most, you should be able to shove 1/2...

Help!! Rheem tankless water heater not producing hot water

Is the water coming out of it soft? We have always had softeners, they shouldn't require any service. Our last one worked fine for 25 years before we sold the house and moved, now this one has worked fine for 15!

Help!! Rheem tankless water heater not producing hot water

When I read this, I sure am glad we don't have a tankless water heater! I bet most that do spend way more on service calls than they ever save on energy!

Electric WH is 1/3 my power bill. Heat pump or Tank-less propane?

You could save a little by insulating the pipes, and elsewhere in the home if they are not insulated.

Electric WH is 1/3 my power bill. Heat pump or Tank-less propane?

The high loop is probably there to reduce thermosiphon circulation, and that is saving you money

Electric WH is 1/3 my power bill. Heat pump or Tank-less propane?

How is your water quality? If your water has minerals in it, it can mean high maintenance on a tankless water heater. How good are you at troubleshooting and doing maintenance on appliances? One or two service calls is going to cost more than your electric bill. Conventional electric water...

    Softener Overcycling?

We also have a vacation home with a water softener, whenever we are gone for more than a day the power is shut off for the pump and softener. You don't want a water leak when you're not there, and if you just shut off the water the softener might try to regenerate, and run out of water halfway...
