Banging pipes close to water heater when flushing any toilet

One last post on this issue. In the interest of documenting what we have found in our effort to identify and correct this problem, I offer my final thoughts. 1. The problem: Pulsating sound (pounding/hammering) in piping after flushing any of the three toilets in the house. Opening any other...

Banging pipes close to water heater when flushing any toilet

Thank you to all who helped solve this mystery. Actually the mystery is only partially resolved but the problem is gone. The PRV was the culprit. My son just finished replacing the PRV and the problem is fixed. Only question remaining is why problem only occurred when one of the three toilets...

Watts LFN45B Copper 3/4-in MNPT Pressure Reducing Valve at Lowe's in Loganville Ga $55.98. Waiting for my son to come help me install it. It is in a tight spot close to the concrete floor where the main comes up in the house

Banging pipes close to water heater when flushing any toilet

I am still fighting this thing. My son just ask a question I had not thought of; are all the toilets on a separate line? Is is possible that their was a code at the time the house was built that required a separate line with a backflow valve? No way to see the piping without tearing out drywall.

I did check the meter at the street while the toilet was running. I could not hear the noise out there but I could see the usage meter jumping fast and slow.

Banging pipes close to water heater when flushing any toilet

Sorry for the delay, in answering, did not get an email. I am not sure about the pipe from the street the house is 20 years old. Not sure what Georgia code was at that time. The only exposed pipe I can see is at the main value and it is only about an inch long under the PRV housing. Looks like...

Banging pipes close to water heater when flushing any toilet

Yes, I believe it has been proven not to be working. In post #15 I mentioned that I had cranked the PRV adjustment from min to max and it did not effect the pressure (it remained at 80 psi). I did also open a valve to drop the pressure just to make sure and the pressure returned to the 80 psi...

Banging pipes close to water heater when flushing any toilet

Just tried this (opening another valve while toilet is pounding). Had not effect on pounding, however, I learned that I think hammering is the wrong term for what is happening. While the toilet was running and a faucet opened, the noise continued but in listening closely to the noise; the pipes...

Thanks but already tried that (It was suggested by another member). It did not make a difference

Yep, question is why does the pressure change while the toilet is running. What ever is causing that is the problem obviously. I guess my next move is to rebuild or replace the PRV since it is the only component proven to not be working properly.

Unfortunately, if this is the case, it would have to be in a wall. None of the exposed pipes where the hammering can be felt are touching anything else.

Our meter is 100 feet from the house under ground at the curb. Don't think the noise would travel that far under ground. I can feel the hammering in the 1/2 inch copper pipe at the water heater.

Is it the general consensus that since this is a cold water hammer the expansion tank is out of the equation? I suspect the expansion tank may be full of water, I can detect no difference in sound when tapping the bottom or top of the tank.

Did this, getting same readings at the hose bib as at the water heater.

Banging pipes close to water heater when flushing any toilet

Yes, this occurs ONLY when any of the three toilets are filling; as soon as the tank is full the hammering stops. It appears that the PRV is not functioning. I have cranked the adjustment from min to max and the pressure remains at 80 psi with all faucets and valves closed. I also notice that...

Banging pipes close to water heater when flushing any toilet

Thanks again for your help. I purchased a pressure gauge at Home Depot for $10 I have connected it to the hot water heater drain connection and it reads 80 psi. According to the info on the gauge instructions it says if pressure is over 60 psi to install an expansion tank. My system already has...

Banging pipes close to water heater when flushing any toilet

Thanks for the responses I will need to purchase a gauge. You mention connect it to a spigot, from this I guess it does not matter where in the system I connect the gauge. I see there are gauges with varying connections. Can you recommend a particular gauge? I will probably order it from...
