Ok I am at a loss on this one. I have a drain in my basement outside my HVAC room. Seems as though it backs up quite frequently when I do laundry. The drain in the laundry room never backs up, just this one. I had Mr. Rooter camera and clean the roots out of the main. That lasted for a good 1.5 years. Then in December '17 it backed up again. I called Mr. Rooter and they jetted it but it did little and said they didnt want to clean it out again with the snake because they feared damaging the clay pipe (sewer main) so I had another well-known drain guy (I have used him before and other plumbers recommend him) come clean it and it held up until last week. I had the local guy come back out but he is just stumped. I have had 2 backups this week! Each time its this black sludge and a bunch of drain flies. It smells and its gross. What can be done? Mr. Rooter is trying to sell me on a $10K new sewer main. Thanks for any help

send the camera down there again but it cant be dirty otherwise the camera cant see once that's done you will have your awnser.......there are other options if your drain is compromised there are companies out there that can line your drain

i just cleared a main full of roots i used a snake with multiple heads......it took about 2 hrs plus its working fine now but i will go back in a couple of weeks when the snow is gone to camera it....the owner
wants to camera and snake on a yearly basis

what do they see......have you or they snaked from the laundry.....how far out do they send the camera....if they have the capability they should be trying for the street so you can see the entire drain

had a problem at my brotherinlaws a couple of years ago his main drain was compromised from one end to the other then i was able to camera from his foundation wall to the street 90' is it possible that you could rent a camera????? mr rooter should be able to tell you whats going on....maybe you should call their service manager if your paying that money and really getting no awnsers i think its backing up because the laundry is being used and the clog is after the floor drain....the floor drain is the low point thars why its comeing out there

There isnt a plumber in the area with a camera. Mr. Rooter is basically it and they are pricey. All they do is send the camera down the clean-out and tell me whats going on. Nobody can tell me what this drain does or why it backs up and the other one does not. What can be done about this drain?

Sounds like you’re pipe is rotted out, 10k for a repipe is reasonable, with 25 year warranty I hope.

I would find someone else even if you pay an out of area charge for another opinion. I have very little faith in anything Mr. Robber says. They are strictly upsell. There is a good chance the black is from the cast iron pipe. If it were me I would get visual proof of broken pipe before I shelled out money.

Thanks all! I saw the camera as Mr. Rooter was using it, but I am not an expert. However, after doing some research, it is not uncommon for most houses to have a problem with roots. I did feel like they were trying to upsell me in to this $10K sewer line project, and thats for 30', not even to the street!. I had another company tell me $7K for the entire 50 some feet from cleanout to city main.

I had another guy today, who is the husband of my wife's co-worker, come in today and he believes there may be something wrong under the concrete in the basement, rather then the main. So, it goes on....lol. He is the only one though who solely focused on this drain. Everyone else believed the main was the suspect. We are gonna try a couple of things and see what we find.

I am not expert but I can recommend a service provider, they will provide you good service regarding this issues at the reasonable price.
ANYTIME HEATING & COOLING INC. , It comes in top service provider in Atlanta and their other branches are available in different cities. Hope this will help you out.

Thanks

By the picture it does not look like a main blockage. I bet is is from a line in the HVAC room. The HVAC pumps out a lot of dirty water that turns into the black sludge that you see coming from the floor drain. I would Look into the HVAC room for the drain that the condensation lines go into and try cabling from there.

its still a stoppage.....another way you can clear it is by using a canvass or rubber balloon to a garden hose to your hot water connection then let it runkink the hose once and a while to see if its draining that's the least evasive way to try clearing the drain

the reason the sewer backs up in the floor drain instead of the washer drain.
is that the floor drain is lower than the washing machine. If the floor drain was plugged then the water would overflow at the washer.

here is a hillbilly method of guessing where the stoppage in your piping is
pour buckets of water into the floor drain till it starts to back up.
if my math is correct. [ I am positive these other guys will correct me if wrong]
1 foot of 3'' pipe = .36 gallons
and 1 foot of 4'' pipe = .65 gallons

by figuring out the number of gallons will give you the footage from that spot to the obstruction
clever little hillbilly's

Sump Pumps are best and easy way to drain out the water from the flooded basements. If you need more informational related to various brands and models of sump pumps you can check out https://www.sumppumpcenter.com/ here.

do you like the original spam or the new bbq spam
I am partial to the original
have you tried DAK ham? it is a step above spam

Is that only backing up when you drain the washer? Kitchen and laundry could tie in with each other. Usually if you have that much sludge I’m pretty sure that floor drain also ties in with the kitchen drain. Does it back up when you use the kitchen? Just the washer?
