Long story short, I am trying to cap off this gas line in addition to having it shutoff at the hex key valve on the wall. The unit is no longer going to be used.

It appears there are two reducing fittings. I can’t seem to get the bigger second one shown off. It looks like someone painted the fittings and I’m sure that isn’t helping but it appears to be brass on maleable iron.

First question these are all normally threaded right i.e. lefty loosely?

Second question aside from penetrating oil, pipe wrench, and elbow grease anything else I’m missing?

2 pliers. One as a back up. Put one on the nut and one on the pipe your unthreading it off of. Have had some that are super tight and take a little extra elbow grease. Make sure the pliers aren't facing the same direction as it doesn't help you. Have them facing different directions. One against the way your turning and one on the nut going the way you want to unthread it.

Justin is correct on how he explained to do this. Just wanted to add that if channel locks won't work then a couple
pair of pipe wrenches with do the trick. Just be careful around the flair fitting threads incase you want to re-use
it again someday.
