So we've followed the main pipe about 20 feet now and still nothing.

Maybe it is plugged at the tank?

R U saying you have uncovered twenty feet and there is no flow found yet?

Like Chris says, the supposed blockage may be further up or at the tank itself. Is there an outlet baffle in the tank @ the outlet?

He used a hole saw and drilled a hole then snaked from the hole into the tank to make sure it wasn't plugged, then from the hole the other direction and snaked 50 feet, which is the end of the snake. When he pulled it out there was a lot of sludge in the "hook" of the snake. The hole in the pipe bubbled for a good while, they snaked it again, and it bubbled more then stopped. Then they moved down about 15-20 feet and dug a hole and all we see is pipe, metal or cast iron continuing to run in that direction still. 50 feet of snake is just about to the end of our yard and the ditch, so we're at a loss.

A periodic pumping is very important for the proper function of your septic system. Use effluent filter, it prevent your drains lines to get clogged.

Ya clogging might be the reason because of which water is backed up.. First try to remove and clean it by yourself and even after that if you face problem, than you need to hire professionals for that
