I'm plumbing an ABS shower drain and have seen p-traps with unions and also p-traps that use a hard-connected street el on the output side. It seems to me the trap with union might make the installation a bit easier, but are there other reasons to choose one over the other?

You cannot by code use an assembled p trap in an inacessiblle location. Use a glued p trap as there is no chance of it opening over time .

When the house is built on a raised sub-floor or unfinished basement.
Even if it is accessible I would still use a glued p-trap as well.
I normaly only use a union p-traps on a sink drains.

when i see a plumber at the supply house and i see a 1 1/2 or 2 inch abs union p-trap on their truck...ill say " oh your one of them" ..... good times

They are awesome for under sink applications, but not in places where they are a pain to get too or could not be seen if leaking. these traps make some service calls so much nicer and quicker, i did one where i disconnected the trap, and installed a new fop. and trap body in under 5 min. ( kids poured modeling clay into drain or something of the likes.... it was solid. )
