Wilkins 720-A PVB -- Its been making a lot of noise during low flow use. I bought the rebuild kits. My problem now is that I can not screw the top piece (bonnet) off. it is corroded shut . penetrating oil no help. leverage, no help. any suggestions? Heat maybe? I don't own a torch.

Did you relieve the pressure inside, after you closed both shutoff valves?

Penetrating oil, CLR, vinegar, might loosen up the bonnet threads.

You can also try giving many dozens of light taps all around the threaded area, after applying the oil. Or vibrating it gently with a bolt chucked into a small hammer drill, pad the bolt head with some duct tape.

Thank you all. valves have been opened to let pressure out. will try vinegar and/ or CLR. The screwdriver method won't budge it at this time. Funny that the cost of the two kits is about as much as a new valve. It just looked easier to rebuild rather than replace.

nothing is working. made a 'wrench' out of wood. (didn't have any metal to work with. The wood just tore.

Good thought...wrong material.:)

You need the stiffness/rigidity of metal for the tapping to transfer to the threads.

Just cut the whole valve out and replace it, save your rebuild kit for a few years from now.

Take the bonnet off the new valve and put some plumbers’ silicone valve grease on the threads, so it comes apart next time.

Or use a very thin coat of teflon pipe dope, if those threads need to be water tight.
