Okay folks, first of all let me lay it down:
1. I am not handy whatsoever
2. Excuse my tub stopper- the finish is horrible

I have been trying to get this twist and pull stopper out for a few hours, and I can't get it. It's approximately 16 years old, and I hardly know what I'm doing.

No, it does not have a set screw.
Yes, I have tried two sets of pliers together to try to loosen the top.

I think it is now broken, as it doesn't twist and stay open.

Help me.

Not sure, but I think it will only unscrew (with a wrench) if turned counter-clockwise while in the fully closed position.

I have what appears to be the exact type of drain stopper that you have. To remove mine I needed to take a open and wrench and grind it down to about 1/2 of the original thickness to fit in underneath the stopper to counter clockwise unscrew it. As I am not home right now I’m not sure of the size of the ranch but probably either 7/16 or half-inch
