Was turning off a toilet angle stop and the valve shot off the pipe. This was a compression fitting that apparently wasn't tightened down properly. Quite a bit of water leaked out before I was able to turn off the house valve. The homeowner wants to file a mold remediation claim with his insurance company. I cant see where I'm at fault here. Has anyone ever had an experience like this before?

YES. And I did not let any water damage the apartment.
I reached under a cabinet. the cold water valve shot off.
I dropped to my belly and pressed my thumb against the pipe while i yelled and kicked the wall
I stayed in that predicament for 15 minutes before i was found and the water turned off.
I let out less than 2 gallons of water.
NOTE
I was on the 3rd floor, the damages would have been to 3 floors
I have a round scar on my thumb from the copper

The way I see it, you are not to blame, but the Insurance company is going to stick it to you without a kiss or Vaseline

Are you the plumber on this job? If not, what is your function?

You are definitely not to blame.
It was a defectively installed angle stop.
The installer is the liable party in this case and you can get plenty of plumbers to testify to that fact.

He may not, in fact, be to blame but that's only his word and would possibly have to prove it.
If he is a licensed plumber I would think his insurance would cover it.
If he's not a plumber he shouldn't have been touching it.
