I recently installed a new sink strainer and the day after, after maybe about 20 minutes of use, I noticed a slight trickle of water from that side of the sink. It look like it's coming from the seal, and perhaps the locking nut that connects the PVC pipe to the strainer. The locking nut isn't absolutely flush with the bottom of the strainer, but it's tight and I can't tighten any further without the strainer spinning and loosening the plumber's putty I used. I'm using Oatey plumber's putty from Home Depot. Not sure if there's anything better. But is there something I should try again, like maybe using less putty? I've read some stuff that says not to use too much, so maybe I used too much when installing the strainer.

Any tips on tightening the locking nut without twisting the strainer?

Stick some needle nose pliers in the crosshairs of the strainer to keep it from turning while you’re tightening the nut

This is why I never use that type of basket strainer. Take it out and buy one that has the deep cup on the bottom. You can tighten
them up and the gasket doesn't squeeze out.moen-22037-1.jpg
