Good morning/afternoon/evening,

In trying to install a new faucet we have encountered a stuck flange and cannot remove the old (1991) drain pipe.

We are using a socket wrench with various materials around the socket (electrical tape, non-slip rubber can opener grips, and even sunk a socket through a rubber stopper) pushed down into the flange while the other person holds the drain pipe.

Nothing is working. We're only getting slippage.

How might you folks go about this?

Thanks! :)
Scott

Just hacksaw off the drain part below the sink, after you lower the big retaining nut, then the sink flange will be free to lift away.

Or clamp a pair of vice grips onto the flange, then unscrew everything else from below.

Or bend all the edges of the sink drain flange upwards with a vice grip pliers, then it will drop down through the drain hole.

If you have a "Moto tool" type hand grinder you can use the cut-off disk to cut around the tube from the top (from inside the pipe). If you don't have one (very handy around the house) you can get a little cheepy one from Harbor Freight for under $10. Go in from the top just below the edge of the flange (the tube is very thin). Go around counter-clockwise so the disk doesn't catch, until the bottom tube drops off. ALL DONE!

Do you mean oscillating tool? But that means that you must lay under the sink and cut over your face/eyes! With the Moto-tool and cutting disk you can cut it out from the top standing up. Cut about 1/2" down from the flange and cut counter clockwise. Should take about a minute.
