Hi guys,

While working I’ve managed to drop a spirit level down a straight waste pipe. I can see it at the bottom standing up vertically.

It’s down about 2.4 meters. I’ve tried drain rods with a hook stuck to the end and string with a hook. Does anyone have any inspiration on how I can get the stupid thing out without having to get the pipe out downstairs?

Cheers

Steve

damn Steve, Anyone ever told you to stuff a rag in the pipe you are working on?

LOL
Has happened to ALL of us, one time or another

Does your level have a magnet on it?
If so, get another magnet, one that is powerful [earth magnet]
tie a string and go fishing

If it is metal, and the pipe is either copper or plastic, have you tried a rare earth magnet on a string?

If not metal, how about a fishing line with a large fishing hook on it?

Maybe some heavy chain with a big open hook would be more maneuverable than a string with a hook.
You could rotate the chain to control the hook, as you guide it by flashlight.

Use a big flashlight, one that won’t fit down the pipe, or tape something crossways to it.

Secure the chain first, on your end, you don’t need another thing lost down there.

If chain is not handy, securely fasten a big hook to a stiff garden hose, that might also work if it’s not too coily.

Cheers for the suggestions guys. I bought a magnet but unfortunately the spirit level is aluminium and therefor not magnetic. I finally got it out using 4 drain rods with a small light and the head of a coat hanger taped to the end of the leading rod. It took ages - never doing that again!!
