Exposed or not? Per the manufacturer, Sharkbite fittings are designed for exposed work only. I assume that is because they rely on an O-ring which can break down/fail over time.

In my case, the fittings would be exposed, so I could replace them if necessary, but I would prefer not to. Are compression fittings more reliable, or less prone to failure, than Sharkbites? If so, why would anybody want to use Sharkbites? They don't seem any easier to install, so why are they so popular?

Compression is far more reliable and sturdy. After a Sharkbite is installed you can still rotate it easily so you can forget about trying to support or stabilize anything with them. My guess is, speed, practically no tools needed, just press them on.

Perfect topic to ask, I don’t have a lot of money to spend or space to accommodate one, but what is an economical model I could put inline with my 3/4” whole house line that also:

1. Has reasonable prices replacement cartridges
2. doesn’t restrict flow very much? Our water here in Tampa isn’t too bad, I’m just looking to catch the big stuff. I’ve read a bit, sometimes the cheaper models have very expensive refills,

We've used this system for about 35 years. Filter can be replaced without draining the system to zero pressure. Not certain about others without the V in the mod. number.

I found the American paper filters to tear holes so went to the string spun Omni filters for about $3.00 / filter when purchasing a case of 12.

The filter wrench pictured is not available for purchase. I made it in the shop to avoid the wimpy crap wrenches offered.

Thanks!!! Where do you get those filters? I keep seeing $8 each.

When it comes to the type of water treatment system you choose for your home – point-of-entry or point-of-use – it’s not about one being better than the other, but it is about the unique water requirements for your home.

You do not need to change the whole filter, just the cartridge. It is usually done every 3 months. Some models advertise for 6 months of lifetime though. For more information on water filters, click here.
