Hello All,

New forum member here. Just moved into a new home last year and finally getting around to fixing a few things that need some attention. As you can see from the picture, our water heater has a lot of corrosion present near the plumbing fittings. I'm worried that a leak or other related damages will occur soon. What would be the best way to handle a situation like this? The fine people at Lowes mentioned to wait it out until the water heater ultimately fails and to then buy a new one. The unit itself is about 8 years old so it's either at or beyond it's useful life probably, but I was wondering if it would be possible to clean up the corrosion somehow or get new fittings near that area?

Thank you

Depends what your water is like. I’m in the Pacific NW with great water, ourheaters last a long time. From the picture I see, that’s going to be a spendy unit. I would have a plumber replace the nipple and the di-electric union and clean up that area. With HWHs, it’s quality of life, are you happy with its production, is it doing what it’s suppose to do. Not age. Kinda like humans.
