For a while now I have been using BrassCraft quarter turn stop valves (model #29). These are not actual ball valves, they are the valves with the cylindrical grey plastic rotor which rotates inside the chrome plated valve. I have used about 50 or so of these and the problem with about 10 of them is that they do not seal internally after a while. To be clear, they DO NOT leak externally, as in they do not drip inside the cabinets. What they do is bypass INTERNALLY past the grey rotor and allow the faucets to drip when the valve is closed. I think that just a little buildup scratches the plastic when the valve is turned. So, they flow water, they don't drip into the cabinets, so that is good, it's just that you can't completely shut the water off when you need to. So the question is: what is the best valve to use? I am not stuck on quarter turns or any particular type. I would just like a good valve that works and lasts a while. Any types or brands I should consider? Thanks a lot.

****, I just ran into that too! I’m at a loss as to what the best stop is. If I could find the old all metal stops that I could rebuild, I might do that but I like the quarter turn. Does anyone one make a true, ball valve stop? Don’t know, but I’m gonna start looking.

I’ve seen the handle snap off on the 1/4 turn Brasscraft valves a few times so I switched back to the multi turn valves.

Dahl makes a higher quality quarter turn valve

Thanks Rickyman. I will check out the Dahl valves. Do you find the multi turn valves more dependable overall? When you say you switched back to the mulit turn, which brand did you switch back to?

use the old style football handle brass craft valves there are 2 washers that can be changed out the small one on the stem and the larger one goes under the packing nut I have rebuilt tons of these it costs pennies and takes 5 minutes

Wolverine brass makes some very nice heavy duty quarter turn angle/straight stops. Sold under the Finale line. They also recently came out with a line that uses ceramic cartridges that can be replaced.

Well, I discovered that Brasscraft not only makes the crappy plastic rotor valves that I was using, they make an actual ball valve angle stop. But in the meantime, I picked up some Lasco angle stop ball valves and they seem to be pretty good. I installed about half a dozen and I will see how they hold up.
