I have a 13 year old slab house in Oklahoma with what I assume is a 13 year old Chinese elm growing about 6 feet from the house in a bathroom on an exterior wall. I'm not sure how the roots got into the pipe, seems like 3" white pvc to me. I pulled the toilet on my own with my auger ready to go to town then I found roots. I'm not sure the best way to fix this. I dont really want to dig up the slab since the bathroom has pretty nice tile. I think running a commercial grade auger with a good bit is the next step to chew up the roots along with some stuff to kill the roots. I'm a little concerned since the roots are about a 1/4" in diameter. Obviously the tree has to go.

I'm not sure how to upload photos but I will post them here:

The pipe might not be broken. I’ve seen the roots come up from the outside of the flange and penetrate the wax to get into the pipe. See if you can pull them out by hand.

Try to get them roots out but I doubt you can get all of it. See how far they go in and try to locate the area of compromised pipe. What you need is a hydro jetting service and camera inspection!
