Replace Kohler oversized tub drain with standard size - possible?

I have an older cast iron tub with what appears to be a Kohler Clearpass drain system. This is an "oversized" drain - the drain shoe is 2" and the OD of the drain trim inside the tub is 3.1" (As opposed to about 2 3/4" of typical modern drains).

I would like to refinish the tub, and ideally remove the entire drain assembly and replace it with a modern Gerber drain like the one below. What I would like to know before disassembly is if anyone know if the tub will have enough "meat" around the drain to seat the smaller 2 3/4" drain?
If it doesn't, I will have to source some repair parts for the existing drain.
