I'm buying a mid-70's house in Florida with cast iron sewer lines. I had it scoped and no problems were found (luckily, as the pipe runs through the concrete pad). The plumber said the walls of the pipe were rough from age and build-up. He suggested hydro-jetting it to keep it running smoothly, and that would give him a better look at the condition of the pipe. I'm not sure this is necessary. Is this commonly done? It's not cheap, about $2k.

It is hard to tell what shape the cast iron is in if the line is really gnarly. I have seen cast iron systems where one section was in decent shape, and another section was crumbling. Were I in your position, I would want to KNOW the condition of the piping before finalizing the purchase.

Call a few other rooter companies and ask for hydro jetting estimates. We usually charge 795.00 here in Northern California but have heard rescue rooter has been charging 1700-2k around here.
