I wrote some months back about doubling the size of a bathroom and the need to find a place to route the vanity drain.

This was adjacent to a large bedroom that used to be the den on the ground floor - split level, garage a few feet away, concrete slab. After I pulled off the sheetrock it was clear that the easiest tie-in for water would be two lines that ran over the area of the new sink, the lines heading towards the kitchen sink on the main floor. The cold line was 3/4 copper. I ascertained that from the kitchen sink, that line went on to supply the water faucet just outside the kitchen as well as the valve for filling the swimming pool.

Yesterday the client calls me and tells me he's been hearing what sounds like a leak in the wall, this on the other side of the bathroom where the supply lines come down. The noise got much louder when the kitchen sink is turned on, my hope was he was hearing some tiny flow in the system somewhere. I went to the backyard, the owner and I doing the cell phone walky-talky thing, turned on the garden hose faucet - much louder - turned it off, same sound as before. I turned on the swimming pool valve - much louder but, saints be praised, the annoying sound stopped when I turned that valve off hard. My client thinks I'm a genius.

It's one of those old, funky valves (pic). Not sure what that large bowl thing is for.

The little faucet handle is hard to really crank down hard, it's small and the edges are sharp enough to hurt a bit. Not sure what all that crap is on it. So the question is, what would be the best modern valve to replace that with? My guess is the house is about 50 to 70 years old. Has knob and tube wiring but with newer looking wire - red, white, and black plastic insulation - not that older all black funky, brittle stuff.

Good info. I'm familiar with the anti-siphon thing with dishwashers. I didn't know a line with house pressure could fall prey to it. But clearly you don't want swimming pool water going anywhere. A new valve would be a huge improvement over the existing. God knows how old it is.
