Hi all - noob here,

Does anyone know if there is a special, square-socket like tool to remove/install a shower valve like the one in the photos I included?

I can't find any brand names on any of the shower parts and I have limited access to the valve - as you can tell by the small hole to access it.

Thanks in advance for any and all help?

Hey Mikey, thanks for that. The same thought crossed my mind, but then I figured the c-clip wouldn't provide enough pressure to keep the cartridge seated and sealed. It probably has an O-ring in the seat and I figured a screw-in capability would provide the pressure to seal it.

That said, I really don't know what I'm talking about, so maybe I'll give it a try. Of course there is not a whole lot of room to get the c-clip on or off easily !

The clip won’t help remove the cartridge. You need a deep socket.

Thanks breplum, that's what I thought and you probably saved me some stress. I've got all kinds of deep sockets, but none of them work on a square shoulder.

there is a set of wrenches called cow bells...the big box stores carry them but they aren't as well made as the ones from the plumbing supply there may be other names for these but that's what I know them by....maybe some out there has a pic of them

Hi Geofd, yes I have a set of cow bells, but they are for normal 6-sided fittings. This fitting as four-sides and is square.

No, its buried in the wall and I need to access through the hole in the tile (see pic). I figured someone might recognize the fitting/cartridge and have a suggestion.

I think that's a moen...they may have a wrench......you could also try a basin wrench and use the adjustable wrench on that it may mark up the brass though
