I tried soldering 1/2 inch copper scraps today. I didnt have any flux but thought I would still get some results. I cleaned everything well and used a Benzomatic flame which is a little more pointed than I would like. I used Lenox WS15039 lead free solder that I had been using on circuits previously. But the info online about this solder shows copper pipe being soldered so it must be made for that. The results were a joke. the fitting came off in my hand. no penetration.
Is no flux the reason for that?

You answered your own question when soldering copper tubing you need flux....

Fortunately you found out on your scraps rather than on your water system.
There are numerous videos on the web addressing and showing soldering of copper piping.
Shame on you!

your results were a joke because you did not use flux.
