I live in a circa 1959 house in NC with cast iron plumbing, lead traps, etc.

I find myself now needing to replace a couple of tub drainsand overflows so, at some point, I have to tie back into the existing plumbing. I'mm looking for advice on exactly how to do this. Perhaps, I cut cut off the pipe behind the knot and use a no-hub connection. Or, I could melt out the lead, remove the oakum, and ream the hole in the cast iron fitting to be a slight interference fit on 2" PVC pipe and use a little sealant around it. Any advice is welcome and appreciated. Thanks.

For drains, cutting it and using a rubber Fernco connector is code approved and very easy.

I've never known a code that said you can use a fernCo adapter but a full shielded rubber coupling yes

you have a couple of options....you could cut just behind the lead wiped joint and from there use a 4 band steel jacketed coupling/another way would be to drill out the lead and oakum...repack with oakum and use (lead wool)same kind of joint as poured lead joint lead wool can be found at hd or lowes I have used it a few times when I cant repour a joint....another way is to use a rubber push gasket......it fits inside the hub of the cast iron and you lubricate thepipe and gasket....tap the pipe into the fitting with a hammer and 2 by 4 against the pipe......not normally used like this but it will work the lead wool/oakum is your best option
