Hello,

Our 1 year old threw a pacifier in the toilet. It seems the easiest way to get rid of it is to force/push it down the pipes in the toilet but from my research this supposedly causes bigger issues?

I do not see how this would cause a bigger issue. Wouldn't this just push the pacifier into the big tank down there I guess...?

Thanks!

Ben

If it has been flushed then it has entered a pipe that is bigger and easier to pass than your toilet. I would say no worries till you hear a gurgle. You almost be better off ( financially) waiting for it to catch a few things. Then it can forced out if needed. But removal without merit can get costly. I have seen bigger items in a septic and a city pump screen. So either way. And disregard the backlash from code book thumpers. There will be a few.

A pacifier may not make it through the trap of the toilet. Waste will hang up on it and cause the toilet to block. The same thing will likely happen if it enters your drainage system. If you know it’s still there just remove the toilet and take the pacifier out of the bottom.

A good test is to take about two or three hand full's of toilet paper and flush it down. Do this a couple times and if
it goes down good it probably passed through the toilet trap and went on its merry way. If the toilet backs up on
you get a toilet auger and run it through the toilet. If that don't work then get all the water out with a shop vac and
pull the toilet like suggested and see if you can see it in the bottom of the bowl. If you can't get it out then you will
have to replace the toilet, and then you'll have a story to tell your little one when he or she gets older. :D

Thank you all!

Yeah it's been stuck down there for a few months... When someone drops toilet paper it does get clogged up for a few days but toilet starts flushing again. We only use the toilet for #1 since this happened.

I am truly seeing different opinions. Will have to evaluate the risks I guess and see what happens..

Exactly how big was this pacifier? I'd consider root intrusion as well. Sure wouldn't hurt to have a camera inspect your main line for $150 or so.

Hi Havasu, it should be standard size I think About 2.5 inches wide 1.5 depth 1.5 height

Your gonna have to pull toilet or get a toilet auger. Toilet auger will scratch bottom of bowl. So I always thru a hand towel in bowl to keep from scratching. Your first message made it sound like it had just happen and you were wondering of possibilities. But it’s already been a few months and you know the possibility. Lol. So know it needs to come out.

So if I force it down with an auger and the toilet flushes properly without issues then I should just assume that it went on its merry way into the big tank and there should be no further concerns?

if you can push it out into drain than it will probably just keep on trucking on.
Worst thing I had stuck was a roll on deodorant stick. Auger pushed it up into the Wier.
then passed it. Damn near would let be get my auger back.
Pulled the toilet and had a hell of a time trying to push it back out the way it came.

here's a toy with 3 small tea cups jammed in behind it in another bowl.

I like the General auger with the large linked head. It has a nice hook on the end.
I have pulled a tennis ball and a few toys out with this one.
I carry a 2nd one with a smaller bulb head because sometimes this one won't pass through a bowl

Thank you David. That is a good point. I could use a tool to pull it out instead of pushing it in. Do you happen to have the model of the augers? I hope they are not too expensive..
