Hi,
I have a 3 knob bathtub, and its been leaking by. I'm pretty sure its the hotwater side since when I turn the hot water off at the water heater, the leaks stops. Might possibly also be a small leak at the diverter since the tub faucet never turns completely off when switched over to the shower head.

Anywho, after researching on the internets on how to fix this, I attempted to disassemble the valves and replace the rubber washers in the hopes of a cheap fix. even got some of those fancy shower valve sockets. BUT upon taking it apart as much as I can, I dont actually see the nut I'm supposed to turn. Hard to see in the picture but it looks like there MIGHT be a nut pretty far back there, but theres a pipe or something ( I assume the one that goes from the hot water side to the diverter valve) in the way. I cant figure out how to get these things out! I'll attach some pictures and hope theyre clear enough to work with.
Also attached a picture of the diverter valve, and the cold water knob taken apart, in the hopes yall might be able to figure out the brand.
More info; the house was built in 1968.

Thanks for any and all input and advice!

looks like if you used the wrench on the 3rd pic on the right that brass piece should thread right out.....

Thanks for the reply. I think that one looks doable, but dont want to mess too much with any unless I can get both out. The hot water just seems different from anything I've been able to find online.

HMM After more research, I think im even more confused than before. Upon trying to put the handle back on, I accidently pulled part of the stem out, and of course I had turned the water back on and made a mess of my bathroom before turning the water back off. But the piece that came out was only about 1.5 to 2 inch long, and had two little rubber things come out (they had springs on the end, those were fun to try and find after having water blast them out and across the bathroom) and the piece was made out of plastic. I finally found some stuff that looks closer to that, and they seem to be called cartridge valve faucets, or something along those lines. This entire time I was under the impression they were compression valves, like EVERY video ive seen has demonstrated with..

I guess my next question: is this normal to use in a shower/bath?So far I've only come across this in reference to sinks.. Is it something that needs to bereplaced with a compression valve?Or is it easier to just replace the cartridge part?

I think it’s a “valley”. If I am correct. Then they are hard to find. Might be quicker to replace valve. Not sure of the “compression “ you spoke of. But a 3 handle is usually and stem and seat. I can’t make heads or tails of the pictures. I only see 1 brass hex face. Amazon has a lot of “valley stem”. Search there. There is usually a video of how to on item page.

I know that Delta and Moen both make/made similar shower valves with cartridges. And, I would guess just about all manufacturers did, until the positive temperature control standards came into effect.

Depending on who made it, cartridges and seats, should be fairly easy to find. The Delta and Moen versions were essentially two handle kitchen faucets, with a diverter valve added on the three handle units.

So, if the OP takes the cartridges to a decently stocked plumbing outlet, he should be able to buy replacement parts.

No luck as of yet finding a replacement part. Any of the delta/moen I've seen in store or online are much bigger than the one I have. On another note, after looking at the diverter (3rd picture on top) does it look like its supposed to just come out like a stem and seat? Theres a leak somewhere there too.
Thanks

if you cant find parts have you checked your local PLUMBING SUPPLY HOUSE take pics of the stems and trim usually they can figure it out if you bring parts and pics that's even better

I would definitely change the cartridges while I'm in there. It's not that expensive.
