Hello. I have a leaky shower valve. I believe the valve is original to the house, which was built in 1994. It is a Delta, but I don't have a model number.

I can remove the temperature selector, but then I am unable to proceed. There are no set screws or anything visible holding the handle sleeve in place, but I am unable to pull it off. I watched a few how to videos of this, and it appears that the handle sleeve should just pull straight off. I haven't pulled very hard on it for fear of breaking something and causing a bigger issue.

See images attached.

Can anyone offer any advice on how to proceed to get the cartridge out?

No don’t try that. Take the rest of the handle off. That’s one cartridge in there. Hang on I find you a you tube video

I think you have an earlier model but same dissemble. Don’t be smarter and try to replace the little cup seals. You will be cussing next week. Just spend the money and order a new cartridge.

Thanks for the video but the problem is that I'm not able to pull the handle off like that guy does. My handle seems to be stuck in place. I didn't want to pull too hard for fear of breaking something. Is there some trick to getting the handle off when it is stuck?

Wiggle wiggle. It will come off. And with any delta. Never use channel locks. Strap wrench will keep you from putting to much force.

The only thing holding handle on was the Phillips head screw holding the front clip on. Sometimes I have to be very careful and take a flat blade on next Seam close to face plate opposite of handle so I can wiggle back and forth. But wiggle means wiggle not shake or yank your trying to wiggle just the handle and not the cartridge. So your pivot point is about middle of cartridge. And it will only wiggle a frog hairs width. Last resort is to have the new cartridge in hand and just break the old plastic. Cartridge. But leave that last resort for after a pro has had his hands on it.

Thank you. I will try again wiggling the handle. Do you think a shot of WD40 in there help things out, or would that do more harm than good?

FYI - just an update in case this helps anyone in the future. I hired a plumber to come and show me how to remove this because I didn't want to break anything. Turns out Rickyman was right - the nut had to come off after pulling off the metal piece over it. After the nut was off, everything came out smoothly.
